Introduction to Resin Knowledge

March 14, 2024

Resins are generally considered to be normal metabolites or secretions of plant tissues, often in combination with volatile oils in the secretory cells of plants, in resin channels or conduits, especially in catheters of perennial woody plant heartwood. A mixture of multiple components, usually an amorphous solid, with a slightly shiny surface, hard and brittle, and a few semi-solid. It is insoluble in water, does not absorb water and swells, and is easily soluble in most organic solvents such as alcohol, ether and chloroform. It is softened by heating and finally melted. It has strong smoke when burning, and has a special aroma or odor. Divided into two major categories of natural resin and synthetic resin.

Rosin, benzoin and the like are natural resins, and phenolic resins, polyvinyl chloride resins and the like are synthetic resins. Resin is the main raw material for the manufacture of plastics, and resins are also used to make coatings (filming materials for coatings), adhesives, insulating materials, and the like.

The resin is divided into natural resin and synthetic resin. Natural resin refers to amorphous organic substances obtained from animal and plant secretions in nature, such as rosin, amber, shellac and the like. Synthetic resin refers to a resin product obtained by chemical synthesis of a simple organic substance or chemical reaction of certain natural products. Synthetic resin is the main component of plastics.
